Maybe on some occasion you have heard this sacrament, when
they say that a person is going to die and call the priest, surely you heard it
from your grandparents or sometimes in church, but you know that it is this
sacrament, who receives it and stops that helps us. Many times, some people
prefer not to mention it out of fear because they think that it is almost condemning
or accepting that death is already there, but it is not like that, on the
contrary it is to guarantee that, by receiving it with faith, we believe that
God will heal our inner disease that is the one that most needs healing and
with it a liberation from our sins, let's take a look at the following
information.
What is the sacrament of the anointing of the sick?
The sacrament of the anointing of the sick, is how its name
indicates anointing or anointing, with an oil, and laying hands on those people
who are sick or in danger of death, this sacrament although many times we think
that only the church He has it or maybe he even invented it or imposed it,
because it is not like that too Jesus instituted it when we see in the Gospel
passage when they bring Jesus the paralyzed man to heal him, everyone expected
Jesus to say get up, stay healthy, more nevertheless Jesus tells him go in
peace your sins are forgiven you.
“Then some people appeared, bringing him a paralytic stretched out on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘Courage, my child, your sins are forgiven’ Matthew 9,2
“Knowing what was in their minds Jesus said, ‘Why do you have such wicked thoughts in your hearts?’ Now, which of these is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk?” Matthew 9,4-5
We can see then that Jesus knowing the hearts of people sees that there is more need to heal the interior and he does it when he forgives sins since it is a libation that happens when we do it, even more so when someone needs help to heal their inside, is in danger of death or has a disease. James reminds us that Jesus left Peter's successors on earth so that when we have any illness, we ask the priests for help to pray for the person and anoint him with oil.
“If one of you is ill, he should send for the elders of the church, and they must anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick man and the Lord will raise him up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” James. 5.14-15.
Who can receive this sacrament?
This sacrament can not only be received by people in danger of death, or terminal illness, but also by elderly people who can relapse into an illness at any time, and by those who are going to undergo a risky operation, and the church allows that if some sick person who received this sacrament and is healed, can in case of being in danger of death again receive it again. You can find more information in details in the Catechism of theCatholic Church numeral 1514, 1515.Who can offer this sacrament?
Only priests (bishops and presbyters) are ministers of the anointing of the sick. It is the duty of pastors to instruct the faithful about the benefits of this sacrament. The faithful should encourage the sick to call the priest to receive this sacrament. Catechism of the Catholic Churchnumber 1516
As we can see, although this sacrament is hardly mentioned, it is very important to receive it, since if we are in danger of death, some illness, whether it be us, a family member, friend or acquaintance of ours, we can share the importance of receiving this sacrament so that above all we heal our interior and keep us more in God's grace, which is the most important thing so that we can be at peace, in that peace and communion with God that we always long to have. Let us not stop receiving the sacraments that God left us as means of salvation for everyone who believes in Him. But above all, we who already know all the blessings we receive with the sacraments, let us share with others the importance of receiving them as well. Let us only have the knowledge, let us get it to the one who needs it
